The heart of the Christmas city
The Erfurt Christmas Market offers a varied entertainment programme with attractions for young and old alike. Highlights include the 25-metre-high Christmas tree, the nativity scene with 14 almost life-size wooden figures, the impressive 12-metre-high Christmas pyramid from the Ore Mountains and the 5-metre Advent wreath on the cathedral steps. Creative ideas for floral Christmas decorations can be found in the extraordinary exhibition made by the egapark, directly below the cathedral.
There is plenty on offer especially for younger visitors. The carousel and Ferris wheel are universally popular and provide lots of fun and enjoyment. Every Sunday during Advent, children from various nurseries light their own handmade Advent wreath candles on the cathedral steps.
The eco-bakery gets children excited for Advent with the scent of Christmas. Here, bakers young and old can roll out, cut out and decorate their own biscuits made from organic dough, without having to register in advance. While the biscuits bake in the oven until they are golden brown, the delicious aroma fills the bakery and whets the appetite for these sweet treats. Baking together is possible on weekdays from 3 p.m. and on weekends from 10 a.m. – fun for the whole family.
Under the motto ‘A Journey Around the World’, egapark presents its traditional exhibition ‘Floral Arrangements for Christmas’ in the historic rock cellar of Erfurt's Domberg. Festive floristry meets porcelain and ceramic art. Atmospheric lighting, soft music and the scent of fir greenery lend the vaulted cellar a special magic.

Another very special attraction for many years has been the lovingly designed fairy tale forest by Erfurt artists Hannelore Reichenbach and Kurt Buchspieß. The scenic fairy tale images by the two Erfurt artists transport young and old alike into the world of well-known stories and invite them to marvel and dream. Children can let their imaginations run wild on the Rathausbrücke and around Benediktsplatz. The fairy tale forest is open to everyone.
